2008 Daylily Price List:
Spiders & Unusual Forms |
We're becoming more and more excited about spiders and spider variants,
with their long narrow petals that flutter gracefully in the wind. Some
are older classics that were almost lost and are now becoming fashionable
again; others are recently introduced, as more hybridizers are attracted
to the form. We have over 100 spiders on display in the garden. We think
they provide a splendid contrast to the round and ruffled forms. Many
are quite tall and produce an excellent effect in the back of the perennial
border. Why not try a few?
The AHS has developed a system to classify spiders according to the
ratio of petal length:petal width. Cultivars with a ratio of 5:1 or
better are called classic spiders; those with a ratio of 4:1 but less
than 5:1 are called spider variants (SV). When available, these ratios
are included in the listings below. Many of the "spidery"
daylily listed here do not meet these guidelines, but nevertheless provide
the open appearance of spiders in the garden. However, only cultivars
with a ratio of 4:1 or greater are eligible for the Harriet Olson (HO)
award for spiders. The new Lambert/Webster (L/W) award is given to outstanding
examples of unusual form (crispate, cascade, etc.) daylilies.
